Qubad Talabani has announced the launch of the largest film fund in Kurdistan’s history during the Cannes Film Festival, as the Kurdistan Region seeks to position itself as a hub for international film production and creative collaboration.
In a statement published during his participation in the festival, Talabani said the Kurdistan Region had attended Cannes for the second consecutive year through the Kurdistan Film Commission, underlining efforts to strengthen ties between Kurdish filmmakers and global cinema institutions.
He said the newly announced fund aims to attract international production companies to Kurdistan while supporting cooperation between local filmmakers and major centres of world cinema, with the goal of bringing Kurdish stories to global audiences through film.
Talabani stressed that the Kurdistan Region’s message at Cannes was that Kurdistan should not be viewed solely through the lens of conflict and tragedy, but also as a place of creativity, resilience, and storytelling.
“Kurdistan is more than the conflicts and tragedies it has endured,” he said, adding that despite years of war and instability, the Region had chosen “the path of building and innovation”.
