UK Deploys Warship to Middle East Amid Potential Strait of Hormuz Mission

HMS Dragon heads to Middle East for potential Strait of Hormuz mission.
UK announced on Saturday that it is deploying the warship HMS Dragon to the Middle East in preparation for a possible multinational mission to safeguard shipping in the Strait of Hormuz once conditions permit.
HMS Dragon, an air-defence destroyer, was dispatched to the Eastern Mediterranean in March, shortly after the outbreak of the Iran conflict, to assist in the defence of Cyprus.
Its redeployment to the Middle East follows a decision by France to send its carrier strike group to the southern Red Sea, as the two countries coordinate on a defensive strategy aimed at restoring confidence in one of the world’s most important trade routes.
"The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the Strait, when conditions allow," a spokesperson for Britain's Ministry of Defence said.
As the U.S. and Iran move cautiously towards a possible resolution to their 10-week conflict, France and United Kingdom have been working on a proposal aimed at establishing the conditions for the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz once the situation stabilises.
The proposed plan would require coordination with Iran, while around a dozen countries have reportedly expressed willingness to participate in the initiative.
Britain’s role in any future maritime protection mission, however, may be constrained by the limited capacity of the Royal Navy, which is considerably smaller than in previous decades and has been forced to retire several vessels before replacement ships entered service.
