US President Donald Trump has described a man accused of attempting to attack administration officials at a black-tie gala in Washington on Saturday night as a “pretty sick guy”, saying he had been previously flagged to law enforcement by family members.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. According to officials cited by Reuters, Allen had allegedly posted an “anti-Christian” manifesto in which he referred to himself as the “Friendly Federal Assassin” and outlined plans to target Trump administration officials, prioritising them by rank.

In televised interviews, Trump said the suspect had undergone a significant ideological shift and suggested mental instability. “He was probably a pretty sick guy,” the president told CBS’s 60 Minutes.

Officials said Allen was arrested at the scene after allegedly firing a shotgun at a Secret Service agent stationed at a security checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton, where the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was taking place. The agent was reportedly protected from serious injury by a ballistic vest.

The incident prompted the evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials.

The manifesto allegedly criticised security arrangements at the venue and was sent to members of Allen’s family shortly before the incident. It also referenced his belief that his actions were intended to respond to perceived political injustices.

US authorities said Allen is expected to face federal charges including assault on a federal officer and attempted murder of a federal officer. Officials added that further charges may follow as the investigation continues.
