The American news website Axios reported on Monday, citing a US official and two informed sources, that Iran has put forward a fresh proposal to the United States through Pakistani intermediaries to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and bring the war to an end.

According to the report, the proposal calls for nuclear negotiations to be postponed until a later stage, while the Strait of Hormuz would first be reopened and the US blockade on Iranian ports lifted.

Axios added that US President Donald Trump is expected to hold a meeting today in the Situation Room with his senior national security and foreign policy team to discuss Iran. The meeting is expected to focus on the current deadlock in negotiations with Tehran and possible next steps in the war.

Speaking on Sunday, President Trump said he believed the war with Iran would end soon and that the United States would emerge victorious. In remarks to Fox News, he said: “I think the war with Iran will end very soon, and we will emerge victorious.”

He added: “We have to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. They cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump also said Washington would obtain Iran’s “nuclear dust” as part of the negotiations.

He expressed hope that “Iran will be smart”, adding: “If Iran wants to talk, they can call us.”
