The Kurdistan Students Association (KSA) was founded on 26 April 1976 in Kirkuk and is regarded as one of the oldest and most influential student organisations in Kurdistan. Throughout its 50-year history, the organisation has been recognised as a centre for developing cadres and future leaders, while playing an important role in the struggle against the Ba'ath regime and later in the civic movement.

The KSA was established during a historic and sensitive period for the Kurdish people by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to confront the Arabisation policies and chauvinism of the Baath regime. Although during that era, establishing an opposition organisation outside the system and against the regime was punishable by imprisonment and execution, the association played an important role in reviving the spirit of solidarity and struggle for the student class was revitalised to stand against the oppression and injustice of the

The association was established under the leadership of Kosrat Rasul Ali, alongside Martyr Shwan, Martyr Rauf Aqrawi, Latif Sheikh Omar and Mohammed Khurshid. Founded during a difficult political period in Kirkuk, the organisation emerged as a revolutionary response to the Ba'ath regime’s policies of repression and exclusion.

Following the historic uprising of the Kurdish people in 1991, the KSA assumed responsibility for defending students’ rights and promoting the advancement of education and science through a renewed vision and strategy. Since then, it has become an important centre for cooperation and support for thousands of students across various educational institutions, while helping to train dozens of skilled and capable cadres now serving Kurdistan in different sectors.

In 2024, after two years of suspended activities, under the guidance of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, the KSA resumed its activities with a renewed structure and contemporary vision to be a collaborator and contributor to the advancement of science and innovation in Kurdistan, protecting students' rights and fulfilling their demands.

Within just 48 hours of launching its new strategy, more than 5,000 students had applied for membership. The organisation currently has more than 114 activity centres across universities and colleges.
