A powerful earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, causing concern across coastal regions and prompting tsunami warnings in several areas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake had a magnitude of around 7.4 to 7.5 and occurred offshore near the Sanriku coast at a relatively shallow depth. The tremor was widely felt in parts of northern Japan, with residents reporting strong shaking for several seconds.

Following the quake, authorities issued tsunami alerts for sections of the Pacific coastline, warning of possible waves reaching up to three metres in some areas. Residents in vulnerable coastal zones were urged to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

Emergency services and local authorities were placed on alert, while transport services in affected regions were temporarily disrupted. Monitoring continues for aftershocks and potential changes in sea levels.

Japan, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries and maintains extensive preparedness systems for seismic activity.
