Iraqi President Nizar Amedi has marked the 38th anniversary of the Anfal genocide, calling for intensified efforts to uncover mass graves, support victims’ families, and strengthen national unity in order to safeguard Iraq’s democratic system and prevent the recurrence of such crimes.

The Iraqi President's statement on Anfal anniversary said:

On the 38th anniversary of the Anfal campaigns carried out by the dictatorial regime in 1988, which claimed the lives of more than 182,000 children, women and elderly people from the Kurdish people, we remember with reverence the immortal martyrs and pay tribute to their steadfast families and loved ones.

The Anfal campaigns constitute one of the most heinous acts of genocide in modern history, leaving deep and painful scars that remain etched in the conscience of humanity.

On this anniversary, we call on the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to intensify efforts to locate the remains of the remaining martyrs in mass graves and return them to their families. We also urge greater care for those affected by internationally prohibited weapons, fair compensation for the families of victims, and the reconstruction of affected areas, particularly following the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal’s recognition of the Anfal campaign as genocide and a crime against humanity.

Furthermore, we emphasise the importance of strengthening unity and solidarity among all communities of the Iraqi people, preserving national achievements, and safeguarding the democratic system in order to achieve a future defined by justice, peace and prosperity.
