The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has marked the anniversary of the Anfal genocide, describing it as a profound national and human catastrophe and reaffirming its commitment to securing international recognition of the crime.
The Political Bureau's statement read:
"Anfal remains a deep wound within the fabric of the nation and a lasting Kurdish and human grief.
Thirty-eight years after the genocide perpetrated against our people in eight phases, which claimed the lives of thousands of Kurdish men, women and children at the hands of the former Ba’athist regime, we reaffirm the decision of the Supreme Criminal Court, which confirmed that Anfal was a war crime and a crime against humanity. We have tirelessly worked to internationalise this crime, and we will intensify our efforts to ensure that it is recognised as genocide and crimes against humanity.
The PUK, through the institutions of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government, will continue to address issues of rights, entitlements, and material and moral compensation, as well as the provision of services to the families of Anfal victims and our resilient people, and will spare no effort in this regard.
On the anniversary of this catastrophe, we bow in reverence and respect to the pure souls of our martyrs.
A salute to the steadfast families of the missing Anfal victims."
