MP Dilan Ghafour, lawmaker of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in the Iraqi Parliament, stated that the current situation in the region requires the resolution of the remaining constitutional entitlements in Iraq, namely the positions of President and Prime Minister.

In a statement to PUKMEDIA, Ghafour said that PUK MPs will take part in the parliamentary session scheduled by the Speaker of Parliament to finalise the vote on the presidential candidate.

She noted that the number of signatures collected from MPs to convene the session has surpassed the required quorum.

Ghafour added that the ongoing war and the wider regional situation make it essential to form a fully empowered government capable of addressing the resulting security, political and economic challenges, which necessitates completing the remaining constitutional procedures.

Iraqi political parties, including the Kurdish blocs, have been engaged in ongoing negotiations to elect a new president following the parliamentary elections held last November, prior to the outbreak of the Iran war.

Following the outbreak of the Iran war, the process has slowed considerably, as its repercussions on Iraq have necessitated a shift in focus towards addressing the resulting security and political challenges.

Ghafour's remarks come as there is a growing push within the parliament to elect a president, with 229 signatures collected so far in support of convening the session.
