The Joint Operations Command announced on Friday the establishment of a high-level coordination committee between Iraq and the United States aimed at preventing terrorist attacks and ensuring that Iraqi territory is not used as a base for launching aggression against the Iraqi people.

In a statement, the Command said the move comes within the framework of the strategic partnership between the two countries, built on years of cooperation across political, economic and security fields, culminating in joint efforts to defeat Islamic State and the Levant. It noted that the decision to form the high-level joint coordination committee was taken during its first meeting held yesterday.

The statement added that both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation to prevent terrorist attacks and to ensure that Iraqi territory is not used as a platform for any aggression against the Iraqi people, security forces, or key national facilities and assets, as well as against American personnel, diplomatic missions and the Global Coalition.

It further stated that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to keeping Iraq outside the scope of the ongoing regional military conflict, while fully respecting its sovereignty. They also pledged to support Iraq in ensuring that its land, airspace and territorial waters are not used to threaten the country itself, its neighbours, or others in the region.

Both sides additionally reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing coordination in counter-terrorism efforts, with an emphasis on Iraqi leadership in achieving shared objectives in a manner that preserves stability and upholds Iraq’s sovereignty.
