The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has issued an urgent security alert, warning American citizens to leave Iraq immediately due to escalating threats from armed groups targeting U.S. personnel and interests, including in the Kurdistan Region.
The embassy said: “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave immediately if you are there.” Attacks have targeted diplomatic facilities, businesses, energy infrastructure, hotels, and airports, and armed groups may attempt kidnappings.
Due to the closure of Iraqi airspace, commercial flights are suspended. The embassy advises that land routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye remain open, though travelers should expect delays. Routine consular services, including visas, are also suspended.
Americans are advised to avoid gatherings, follow local authorities’ instructions, maintain food, water, and medicine supplies, and monitor U.S. State Department updates.
