On Tuesday, the Coordination Framework underlined the importance of forming a government that achieves national consensus and expressed its full support for the government and security forces across all branches and formations.

A statement from the Framework noted that it held its 264th regular meeting at the Government Palace in Baghdad to review recent developments at national, regional, and international levels.

The meeting addressed constitutional requirements, with all members agreeing on the need to expedite their completion, particularly the formation of a government that protects the national interest and secures national consensus — regarded as the cornerstone for nation-building and preserving unity.

The Coordination Framework reaffirmed its backing for the government and the security forces in fulfilling their constitutional, national, and legal duties, including safeguarding sovereignty, enforcing the law, protecting public and private property, securing diplomatic missions and embassies, and maintaining stability across the country.

Former MP Karwan Yarwais told PUKMEDIA that during the meeting, the Coordination Framework decided that Nouri al-Maliki would withdraw his candidacy for the next prime minister. He added that the meeting took place in Maliki’s absence, noting that the withdrawal would avoid any perception of placing responsibility on the Coordination Framework’s leaders.

Yarwais explained that recent developments following the conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel had changed the political equations, prompting the decision. Maliki did not oppose the outcome, and consideration is now being given to nominating another technocrat to form the new government in place of Maliki.

According to a source quoted by Al-Sharq TV, the meeting concluded with a preliminary agreement to withdraw Maliki’s nomination, though disagreement remains over the constitutional and political mechanism for announcing it. Attendees agreed to focus on the appropriate method for withdrawal, whether through an official statement by the State of Law Coalition, a consensus declaration by the Coordination Framework, or the presentation of a consensus alternative alongside the withdrawal.
