Iraqi Justice Minister Orders Tightened Prison Security Measures and Enhanced Readiness

The Iraqi Minister of Justice has ordered the enforcement of strict security measures across prison sections run by the Iraqi Corrections Department, together with the provision of the necessary resources.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice’s media office and received by PUKMEDIA, it was noted that the Minister of Justice, Dr Khalid Shwani, chaired an expanded meeting on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. The meeting was attended by the Ministry’s Senior Undersecretary, the Director General of the Iraqi Corrections Department, senior officials and prison section directors. It focused on reviewing prisons’ security preparedness and ensuring that all required resources are in place.

The statement added that discussions covered the preventative measures currently implemented within prisons and ways to strengthen them by securing the necessary logistical support, technical requirements and security equipment needed to maintain stability and enhance readiness levels.

According to the statement, the Minister instructed prison staff to remain fully prepared and highly vigilant, exercising the utmost caution in carrying out their duties. He also stressed the need to intensify coordination and maintain continuous communication with the security forces responsible for protecting prison perimeters, in order to ensure unified decision-making and a swift response to any emergency.
