Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, the newly appointed Minister of Defence of the Netherlands, is a prominent Dutch politician of Kurdish origin. Born on 18 June 1977 in Northern Kurdistan, she assumed the defence portfolio in early 2026 and also serves as Deputy Prime Minister in the newly formed Dutch cabinet.
Born into a Kurdish family, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius spent her early childhood amid political turmoil. In the early 1980s, her family fled persecution, and she arrived in the Netherlands as a child refugee—an experience that would later shape her political outlook and public life.
Growing up in the Netherlands, she pursued her education and earned a master’s degree in social and cultural sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She gradually built a political career, beginning in local politics before moving on to national office.
Over the years, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has held several senior positions, including State Secretary and later Minister of Justice and Security, becoming one of the most visible figures in Dutch politics. In 2023, she was elected leader of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), one of the Netherlands’ major political parties.
Her appointment as Minister of Defence marks a significant milestone. She now oversees national defence policy, the armed forces, and the Netherlands’ role in European and international security at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.
For Kurds across Europe and the wider region, her appointment carries meaning beyond Dutch politics. It represents a rare and powerful moment: a Kurdish woman, once a refugee, now entrusted with one of the most sensitive security portfolios in a major European state.
