Yemen’s Saudi‑Backed Government Launches Operation Against UAE‑Backed Forces in the South

The STC has insisted its fighters will remain in place in the southern provinces that Saudi Arabia and the official Yemeni government want them to withdraw from.
Yemen’s Saudi‑backed government has launched an operation in Hadramout province to reclaim military sites from the UAE‑backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), marking a significant escalation in internal divisions and regional tensions.
Officials describe the move as a “peaceful effort” to restore order and security in key military installations, but local sources report that the operation has included military manoeuvres and airstrikes, raising fears of further clashes in southern Yemen.
Saudi–UAE Rift Shapes the ConflictThe operation reflects the growing rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who have historically been allies in Yemen’s civil war. Saudi Arabia supports the internationally recognised government and seeks a unified Yemen, while the UAE backs the STC, which pursues greater autonomy or independence for southern Yemen.
Recent months have seen the STC expand control over strategic southern regions, including parts of Hadramout and Al‑Mahra provinces, while the Saudi-backed government has sought to assert authority over these areas. Observers say the current operation is the latest sign of the widening regional rivalry on Yemeni soil.
Humanitarian ImpactThe escalation occurs amid a serious humanitarian crisis, with millions of Yemenis suffering from food insecurity, displacement, and limited access to medical care. The recent closure of Aden International Airport has stranded travellers and disrupted essential services, compounding civilian hardship.
Aid agencies have warned that renewed clashes and political disputes could further hinder humanitarian operations and exacerbate Yemen’s already dire situation.
