Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid received UN Secretary-General António Guterres, at the Baghdad Palace on Saturday, 13 December 2025.

President Rashid commended Guterres’s prominent role in supporting Iraq through various stages and his ongoing commitment to strengthening cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations.

He praised the United Nations’ continued support for Iraq over the years, emphasising that the official announcement of the end of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) marks the beginning of a new phase of joint work between Iraq and the UN. This new phase, he noted, aligns with the requirements of the coming period and the priorities of the Iraqi state, contributing to efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development. He underlined the need for continued cooperation across multiple fields.

President Rashid also called for a more effective UN role in addressing water issues and in monitoring the implementation of commitments and agreements that ensure equitable access to water resources for all concerned parties.

He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to maintaining security and stability, and to consolidating democratic principles, noting that the success of the recent elections represented an important step forward.

Guterres expressed his appreciation for Iraq’s role at both regional and international levels. He reaffirmed the United Nations' continued support for Iraq and praised the notable progress made in strengthening security and stability, advancing development, and successfully conducting parliamentary elections — achievements he said had reinforced democracy in Iraq.
