The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, has commended Iraq for its recent electoral progress and urged an end to attacks targeting vital energy infrastructure in the country.

Addressing the UN Security Council in New York during his final briefing before the conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate at the end of 2025, Al-Hassan highlighted Iraq’s “commitment to free, fair and inclusive elections,” noting that the latest parliamentary vote witnessed improved organisation and public engagement.

He praised the efforts of the Independent High Electoral Commission and acknowledged the role of UNAMI’s electoral assistance office in supporting the process. Al-Hassan described Iraq’s recent elections as among the most orderly conducted in the country in recent years.

Turning to security concerns, the UN envoy strongly condemned recent strikes on critical energy sites, including the attack on the Khor Mor gas field in the Kurdistan Region. He stressed that such assaults endanger civilians, damage the national economy, and undermine the country’s stability. He urged Iraqi authorities to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents.

Al-Hassan also emphasised the importance of completing the formation of both the federal government in Baghdad and the next Kurdistan Regional Government, saying these steps offer “an important opportunity to strengthen relations between Baghdad and Erbil and address longstanding unresolved issues.”

As UNAMI prepares to conclude its mission after more than two decades, the envoy expressed gratitude to the Iraqi government for its partnership and reaffirmed the UN’s continued readiness to support Iraq’s democratic development and long-term stability.
