Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), has reaffirmed the party’s support for women on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, emphasising the vital role women play in Kurdish society.

President Bafel said in a statement: “We respect the status of the brave and courageous women of our people and will always staunchly advocate for their rights and realise their aspirations. Our women have always been part of our sovereignty and pride; their role in the development of our society is evident, and their sacrifices are a source of pride for all of us.”

He added: “On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we proudly commemorate all the brave women who have worked tirelessly and led women to ensure that they are an integral part of life and have their rightful place in the political and social landscape of Kurdistan.”

President Bafel also stressed action against harassment and abuse, stating: “We stand with women and take action against all those who harass or violate them. We will protect their rights wherever necessary. The PUK will always support women and help bring them forward in all spheres.”

The United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women to raise global awareness of violence against women, including rape, domestic abuse, and other forms of abuse.

This year’s campaign, UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against Women and Girls, seeks to mobilise all sectors of society. Governments are urged to enforce laws criminalising such violence; technology companies must ensure the safety of their platforms and remove harmful content; donors are called upon to fund feminist organisations combating abuse; and individuals are encouraged to raise their voices and support survivors.
