Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, held separate meetings in Erbil on Tuesday with British Ambassador Irfan Siddiq, Italian Ambassador to Iraq Niccolò Fontana, and Mohammed Al-Hassan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq.

The discussions focused on the latest developments in Iraq following the parliamentary elections. Talabani praised the smooth conduct of the elections as a significant achievement for the Iraqi people and expressed hope for the formation of a government that reflects the election results while protecting the rights of all communities.

Highlighting the priorities for the incoming governments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Talabani stressed the need to resolve outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government in line with the Constitution. He said: “Resolving these issues paves the way for a stable and economically prosperous Iraq and for improving services for its citizens.”

On the future role of Kurdish parties in the next Iraqi government, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised the importance of a united approach. He called for Kurdish forces to agree on a joint programme through constructive dialogue and to negotiate with Iraqi parties as a single front to safeguard the constitutional rights of the people of Kurdistan.
