In a significant development on Wednesday, dozens of journalists covering the U.S. Department of Defense vacated their offices and returned their press credentials in protest of newly implemented reporting restrictions. The policy, introduced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, requires media outlets to sign an agreement acknowledging that they will not seek unauthorized information and may have their press credentials revoked if they report on information—classified or unclassified—that has not been approved for release.

Major media organizations, including The New York Times, CBS News, Fox News, Reuters, and The Washington Post, have refused to comply with the new policy, citing concerns over press freedom and the potential for government overreach. The Pentagon Press Association, representing over 100 media outlets, has condemned the policy as a threat to free speech and accountability.

In contrast, conservative outlets like One America News Network have agreed to the new terms. The White House, supported by U.S. President Trump, has defended the policy, describing it as necessary to manage a "disruptive" press.

Despite the loss of in-house access, journalists have pledged to continue their reporting on the Pentagon through alternative means, emphasizing their commitment to holding the military accountable and ensuring transparency.
