Iraqi President Reaffirms Iraq’s Commitment to Deepening Cooperation with NATO

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid received on Monday, 13 October 2025, Major General Christophe Hintzy, Commander of the NATO Mission in Iraq, along with his accompanying delegation, at Baghdad Palace to discuss ongoing collaboration aimed at bolstering Iraq’s defence capabilities and enhancing the professionalism of its armed forces.
President Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to deepening cooperation with NATO in the fields of training, advisory support, and capacity building. He stressed that such partnership “will enhance the effectiveness of Iraq’s military institutions and strengthen their ability to safeguard national stability.”
The discussions also examined recent regional developments, highlighting the crucial role of international cooperation in promoting peace and security. President Rashid noted that Iraq is currently experiencing a period of stability as it approaches a key democratic milestone, the forthcoming parliamentary elections, asserting that “our objective is to ensure free and fair elections that reflect the will of all Iraqis.”
President Rashid further reflected on his participation in the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he outlined Iraq’s positions on key domestic and international matters. He drew particular attention to the upcoming international conference on the repatriation of individuals from Al-Hawl refugee camp and related detention sites, emphasising “the strong international support for Iraq’s efforts to resolve this matter definitively.”
Major General Hintzy expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reiterated NATO’s commitment to continue supporting Iraq through training and advisory programmes, underlining the alliance’s intention to strengthen the partnership in a manner that serves the shared interests of both nations.
