United States Government Shuts Down After Congress Fails to Pass Funding Bill

The White House.
The United States government has officially entered a shutdown after Congress failed to reach an agreement on a funding package by the deadline of 1 October 2025.
The deadlock in Washington has led to the suspension of many non-essential federal services, with hundreds of thousands of government employees set to be furloughed without pay. Essential services, such as national security, border control, air traffic management, and emergency medical care, will continue to operate.
The shutdown comes amid deep divisions in Congress over spending priorities, with negotiations breaking down before the fiscal year deadline. Previous shutdowns have typically lasted from a few days to several weeks, depending on how quickly lawmakers are able to broker a compromise.
The White House has urged Congress to take immediate action to pass a budget and end the disruption, warning that prolonged paralysis would damage the economy, undermine public confidence, and create hardship for federal workers and citizens dependent on government services.
For now, the world’s largest economy faces a period of federal paralysis until lawmakers can break the deadlock in Washington.
