Following detailed intelligence gathering, Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG), in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) and Iraqi forces, successfully destroyed multiple weapons and ammunition depots in Hamrin region.

According to a statement by the CTG, the operation was conducted under the direct supervision of CTG Director Wahab Halabjay.

The statement also noted that operation began with precisive air strikes, followed by ground forces clearing 18 suspected target sites across an area of approximately 25 kilometres, where several weapon depots were seized, containing substantial quantities of heavy and medium ammunition.

The CTG also reaffirmed that joint efforts with the coalition and Iraqi forces will continue to remove terrorist threats from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

ISIS captured large parts of Iraq in 2014 and declared a self-styled “caliphate,” leading to widespread violence and mass displacement. Although Iraq declared victory over the group in 2017, ISIS remnants remain active, particularly in disputed territories between the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

These areas—including parts of Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin provinces—continue to face threats from ISIS elements who engage in ambushes, kidnappings, and extortion targeting both civilians and security personnel.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces regularly carry out joint operations aimed at eradicating these remaining terrorist networks.
