Kurdistan VP Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa's meeting with Mazin Alfaqih, Political & Economic Affairs Chief
Kurdistan Region Vice President Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa received on Monday, 15 September 2025, Mazin Alfaqih, Political & Economic Affairs Chief at the U.S. Consulate in the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting addressed the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, including the ongoing threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS), the state of relations between Erbil and Baghdad, and the issue of salaries and financial entitlements for the Region.
Vice President Sheikh Mustafa underlined the crucial role of U.S. forces within the framework of the Global Coalition against ISIS, emphasising the need to strengthen coordination between the Kurdistan Region, the Peshmerga forces, and coalition partners to safeguard the region’s security and stability.
The two sides also reviewed the process of reforming and reorganising the Peshmerga forces. They stressed the importance of advancing the reform agenda and accelerating the completion of its remaining stages.
Discussions further covered regional dynamics, including developments in neighbouring countries and wider Middle Eastern crises. Both parties exchanged views on the implications of these challenges in the region.
