Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed received with Dr Thomas Lier, Director of the Goethe-Institut in the Kurdistan Region, at the Zamwa Gallery in Sulaymaniyah.
The two sides discussed joint efforts to preserve cultural heritage and safeguard historical monuments.
Dr Thomas Lier expressed his admiration for the Zamwa Gallery and its contribution to the art of painting, praising the gallery's efforts to safeguard this vital aspect of civilisation and commending the preservation of the historic house in an exemplary manner in the heart of Sulaymaniyah's Bazaar (down town market).
Founded in 1995, Zamwa Gallery stands as one of the most significant cultural institutions in the Kurdistan Region, dedicated to showcasing the works of Kurdish artists. The gallery is housed in a historic residence dating back to the early years of Sulaymaniyah’s establishment, situated in the heart of the city.
This house holds special cultural and historical value, as it was once the home of the renowned Kurdish writer, poet, and novelist Ibrahim Ahmed, laureate of Kurdistan and father of the First Lady of Iraq.
Zamwa Gallery hosts a rich collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and graphic art. Over the years, it has organised dozens of solo and group exhibitions, featuring artists from across the Kurdistan Region, other parts of Kurdistan, and Iraq. Through these initiatives, the gallery has become a hub for cultural exchange and a symbol of Kurdish artistic resilience and creativity.
