Kurdistan VP Meets Italian Ambassador to Discuss Political and Security Developments

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, received Niccolò Fontana, the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, along with his accompanying delegation.

Their discussions covered the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the wider region, relations between the Kurdistan Region and Italy, the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad, as well as the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq.

Both sides underscored the importance of maintaining and expanding bilateral relations and enhancing joint cooperation. With regard to the outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, they emphasised the need for continued dialogue and negotiations, with solutions to be found in line with the Constitution.

The meeting, also attended by Tommaso Sansone, the Italian Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, touched upon the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet and reviewed the steps and efforts undertaken in this process. They further assessed the overall situation in the region, exchanged views on recent events, and discussed current developments.
