The United States on Thursday commemorates the 24th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives and reshaped global security and international relations.

On 11 September 2001, four passenger aircraft were hijacked by terrorists. Two were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one struck the Pentagon near Washington, and the fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers.

The attacks resulted in 2,977 deaths, excluding the hijackers, making it the deadliest terrorist incident on U.S. soil. Thousands more were injured, and long-term health complications continue to affect first responders and survivors.

The tragedy prompted sweeping changes in U.S. domestic and foreign policy, including the launch of the “war on terror”, military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and extensive reforms in intelligence and homeland security.

International leaders also issued statements of solidarity with the United States, underscoring the importance of global cooperation against terrorism and extremism. The anniversary remains a moment of reflection not only for Americans but also for the international community, which continues to grapple with the enduring legacy of 9/11.

As the U.S. marks the 24th anniversary, the message from officials and survivors is clear: to remember the victims, honour the resilience shown in the aftermath, and reaffirm commitments to prevent future acts of terrorism.
