Qubad Talabani Highlights Economic Development as Key to Reducing Illegal Migration

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Mr Ralf Schroeder, Deputy Head of Mission at EUAM Iraq, to discuss strategies for economic development and youth employment.
During the meeting, both sides emphasised that the root solution to illegal migration lies in creating job opportunities and fostering economic growth within the region.
Talabani and Schroeder also agreed that increased investment and active participation in Kurdistan’s development would not only provide substantial economic and trade benefits to the European Union, but would also help curb the number of Kurdish youth seeking to migrate illegally to Europe.
Qubad Talabani Urges Greater Emirati Investment in Kurdistan’s Development
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, received a senior delegation from the United Arab Emirates in Erbil on Wednesday, 10 September 2025. The delegation was led by Saeed al-Hajeri, Assistant Minister for Economic and Trade Affairs.
During the meeting, Talabani stressed that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) attaches great importance to relations with the UAE and is eager to see Emirati companies and investors play an active role in Kurdistan’s development.
The Emirati delegation, visiting the Kurdistan Region to explore and assess investment opportunities, stated their intention to launch major, long-term projects in the Region.
Talabani highlighted the wide scope for Emirati investment, particularly in agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy. He remarked: “Kurdistan can serve as a food basket for all of Iraq and export its agricultural products abroad.”
He urged the delegation to “encourage Emirati investors to establish projects in Kurdistan, where all necessary facilities are provided. The Region also boasts a skilled workforce across these sectors.”
Qubad Talabani Reaffirms Support for Palestine and the Two-State Solution
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, received Dr Maher Al-Karaki, the Consul General of Palestine in the Kurdistan Region, on Wednesday, 10 September 2025.
In their talks, Talabani reflected on the long-standing ties between the Kurdish and Palestinian movements, noting: “The Kurds have always stood behind the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.” He voiced deep concern over the humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his hope for an immediate end to the war and the establishment of peace across the region. He reiterated his backing for the two-state solution, which continues to be endorsed by most countries worldwide.
The meeting also touched upon ways to strengthen relations between the Kurdistan Region and Palestine. Both sides agreed on the importance of fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between the Kurdish and Palestinians at the level of the international community.
