During a meeting with a number of Kurdish women, Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed underlined the vital role of women in supporting society and safeguarding national identity.
The gathering, attended by the Secretary of the Kurdistan Women Union, representatives of the Kurdistan National Congress Commission, Star Congress, and several women’s rights activists, focused on the challenges and aspirations of Kurdish women.
“We cannot achieve any of our rights through division. We must remain united on national issues and never abandon one another,” First Lady Ahmed declared.
She added: “Despite the heavy burdens placed upon them, women have never given up. Instead, they became a leading force for resistance and change, and stood as examples of courage and determination across the globe.”
The discussions also addressed the future of the Kurdish women’s movement, which participants agreed is closely tied to the political climate, social transformation, and regional developments. The meeting emphasised that Kurdish women can enhance their struggle through cooperation with women’s rights organisations internationally.
Participants further reviewed the activities of the Women Conference and the recommendations emerging from the Social Democratic Alliance Conference, held in Sulaymaniyah from 27 to 30 August 2025.
Speaking on the regional political landscape, First Lady Ahmed stressed that Kurdish women must take an active role in the wider political movement across the Middle East and advance their struggle for political rights and representation.
