Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met on Monday, 1 September 2025, with Mohammed al-Hassan, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, to discuss the latest political and security developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
Deputy Prime Minister Talabani underlined the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting institutions, noting that the recent developments in Sulaymaniyah were part of broader efforts to enforce the rule of law, implement judicial decisions, and preserve peace and security.
He reaffirmed Sulaymaniyah’s reputation as a centre of freedom of political activity and freedom of expression in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region, stressing that this legacy would continue. However, he made clear that the formation and activities of militias or armed groups outside the framework of the law would not be tolerated.
On the matter of detainees arrested during the recent incidents, the Deputy Prime Minister assured that all would be treated in accordance with the law and that their legal rights would be fully protected, as with any other suspects.
