SDAAW Conference in Sulaymaniyah.
Karwan Gazneyi, Spokesperson of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), announced the successful conclusion of the Social Democratic Alliance in the Arab World (SDAAW) Conference in Sulaymaniyah, describing the election of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani as President of the alliance as a historic achievement for the Kurdish people.
The SDAAW Conference concluded on its fourth in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday, 30 August 2025. Throughout its sessions, the conference has focused on critical issues including peace, security, and the pressing political challenges facing the Arab world. The gathering has brought together a broad spectrum of political leaders, intellectuals, and public figures from across the Arab world, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region.
After the conclusion of the SDAAW Conference, Gazneyi said in a statement: "Over the past four days, the Kurdistan Region, and Sulaymaniyah in particular, once again affirmed its role as a major diplomatic centre by embracing the SDAAW conference, held in coordination with the Global Progressive Alliance, and hosted by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The conference attended by dozens of world leaders from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, the United States, and Latin America."
"Current issues such as security, democracy, justice, equality, and social justice were among the conference’s top priorities," he added. "We agreed that starvation and war serve no one, and that the only solution to security challenges in the Middle East is a return to the negotiating table to address regional issues peacefully."
Gazneyi congratulated President Bafel and the PUK and said: "Today, Saturday, on the final day of the conference, PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani was elected President of the Social Democratic Alliance in the Arab World, the Middle East and North Africa. This represents a historic milestone for our people, our region, and the PUK."
"From here, we extend our warmest congratulations to all cadres, voters, and supporters of the PUK, as well as to the entire people of Kurdistan, on this historic achievement. We are confident it will mark a turning point for our region," he said.
He added: "President Bafel’s election as SDAAW President provides a renewed opportunity for social democratic parties in the Middle East to demonstrate how the rule of law and strong institutions can underpin political diversity. Simultaneously, the development of economic infrastructure, economic recovery, and a free media can pave the way toward a brighter future for our region."
