Remembering History and Creating a Better Future” event at Sulaymaniyah University.
Sulaymaniyah University commemorated on Monday, 25 August 2025, the 80th anniversary of China’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World War Against Fascism with an international event themed “Remembering History and Creating a Better Future.”
The ceremony was attended by Latif Nerwayi, Head of the Media Board of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK); Prof. Kosar Mohammed Ali, President of Sulaymaniyah University; Cui Wei, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Iraq; Liu Jun, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Erbil; along with diplomats, political figures, intellectuals, and journalists.
Organised by the China Studies Centre (CSC) at Sulaymaniyah University, the event commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World War Against Fascism, a milestone celebrated as a victory not only for China but for all peaceful nations worldwide.
Farid Arshad, Head of Media and Communications at the China Research Center, told PUKMEDIA: “Sulaymaniyah is the capital of culture, a vibrant city that hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Sulaymaniyah University is one of the city’s key centres, consistently organising seminars and activities such as today’s event.”
Arshad highlighted the economic and academic significance of the seminar programme: “Today’s event includes a seminar on China’s Belt and Road Initiative -Modern day Silk Road-, exploring opportunities for the Kurdistan Region to benefit from this project. The Silk Road route—from China through Iran, into the Kurdistan Region, and onwards to Baghdad—offers substantial economic prospects for Sulaymaniyah and the wider region.”
Regarding the event, the China Research Centre previously noted on its official Facebook page: “This event represents one of the most important diplomatic activities organised by the China Research Center at Sulaymaniyah University this year.”
The event reflects Sulaymaniyah University’s ongoing role as a hub for academic dialogue, cultural exchange, and international cooperation, strengthening ties between Kurdistan and China while promoting economic and educational development.
