Kurdistan VP, Italian CG Reaffirm Support for Continued Peshmerga Training

Kurdistan VP Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa's meeting with Italian CG Tommaso Sansone.
Vice President of the Kurdistan Region Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa met with the Italian Consul General Tommaso Sansone on Monday, 4 August 2025, for high-level talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations, advancing Peshmerga reforms, and addressing shared security concerns across the region.
The meeting covered Italy’s relations with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the ongoing reform and reorganisation of the Peshmerga forces, the threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS), and the persistence of extremist ideology in the region. Both sides also highlighted the importance of continuing the training of Peshmerga forces.
Vice President Sheikh Jaafar and Consul General Sansone emphasised the need to further strengthen Italy’s ties with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region across various sectors. They also exchanged views on the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad, underlining the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding based on the Iraqi constitution.
Discussions also touched on the formation of the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the anticipated process of the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, and the latest developments across the Middle East.
