President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Bafel Jalal Talabani, paid a visit to the General Directorate of Counter-Terrorism, where he was received by Director General Wahab Halabjay.

Halabjay briefed President Talabani on the current intelligence and military strategies employed by the counter-terrorism forces and outlined the strategy and conduct of ongoing operations. He affirmed the agency’s continued commitment to safeguarding the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

President Talabani commended the Counter-Terrorism forces for their pivotal role in combating terrorism and maintaining security not only in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, but also beyond.

“The history of the Counter-Terrorism forces in the fight against al-Qaeda, the war against ISIS, and against terrorism more broadly, has been prominent, impactful, and a source of great pride. It is an honour for all of us that the Kurdish people have established such a capable and disciplined military force,” he said. “This force has played a crucial role not only in Kurdistan and Iraq, but also in west of Kurdistan (northeastern Syria), representing the Kurdish nation with dignity and strength.”

He continued: “Your joint operations today with global coalition partners and Iraqi forces are a testament to your courage and heroism. We are proud of your achievements.”

President Talabani also underlined the importance of ongoing training, effective coordination, and close cooperation between all security institutions. He instructed all forces to perform their national duties as a unified team, saying: “Be a hand of steel against terrorists and enemies, and a hand of peace for defending and stability of our homeland.”
