PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), commemorated the Yazidi genocide, describing the atrocities committed by ISIS as one of the darkest chapters in modern history—crimes that must never be forgotten. He called on the Iraqi government to provide both material and moral reparations to the victims and their families.
ISIS terrorist organisation seized vast parts of northern and western Iraq in June 2014. Two months later, on 3 August 2014, the organisation launched a genocide against the Yazidi community in the Shingal (Sinjar) district, which is heart of the Yazidi land. They kidnapped 6,417 Yazidi women and children. Many people were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labour. In the space of a few weeks, more than 5,000 people were killed.
Statement by Bafel Jalal Talabani on the Anniversary of the Yazidi Genocide:
On the anniversary of the genocide committed against the Yazidi community in Shingal, we extend our deepest condolences to our Yazidi brothers and sisters. The heinous crimes carried out by ISIS terrorists represent one of the darkest chapters in the history of humanity—atrocities that will never be forgotten.
We continue to hope for the safe return of all displaced Yazidis to their homes, and for the reunion of families still searching for loved ones whose fate remains unknown.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan reaffirms its unwavering support for the rightful demands of the Yazidi community. Chief among these is the urgent need for both material and moral reparations to be provided by the Iraqi government to the families of the victims. We also emphasise the importance of rebuilding Shingal and ensuring a dignified life for its people.
Bafel Jalal Talabani
President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
