A Powerful Earthquake hits Russia.
A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East on Wednesday, prompting tsunami warnings and evacuation orders across parts of the Pacific, including Japan and Hawaii.
The earthquake, recorded at a depth of 19 kilometres, unleashed waves up to four metres high along sections of Russia’s eastern coast, with the town of Severo-Kurilsk among the hardest hit. Authorities responded swiftly by evacuating coastal areas and monitoring aftershocks.
In Japan, tsunami alerts were issued from Hokkaido to Chiba, with anticipated wave heights of around one metre. Local governments advised residents to move to higher ground, though no major damage or injuries have been reported so far.
Hawaii also issued evacuation orders for coastal regions. Sirens were sounded in Honolulu, and traffic congestion was reported as residents moved inland. Ships were directed to leave harbours, and officials warned of potential “wraparound waves” that could strike from multiple directions.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center extended alerts to the U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Guam, Micronesia, and parts of Central and South America, urging residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant.
Emergency services across the region are closely monitoring the situation as assessments continue and aftershocks persist.
