The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG), in coordination with Iraq’s Ministry of Defence, has arrested two high-risk terrorism suspects in Sulaymaniyah province, the CTG announced on Monday.

In a statement, the CTG confirmed that the arrests were carried out during a joint operation with the Intelligence Tasks Cell of the General Directorate of Intelligence and Security of the Iraqi Ministry of Defence.

According to the statement, both individuals were wanted under Article 4 of Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Law. Legal proceedings against the suspects are now underway.

The Islamic State (ISIS) seized large swathes of Iraqi land in 2014, declaring a "caliphate" and killing thousands of people there before Baghdad declared victory in 2017. However, remnants of the terrorists are still active in the country, especially in the regions disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.

The terrorists ambush, kidnap, and extort both civilians and members of the security forces in the disputed areas, which stretch across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin.

Security forces conduct frequent operations aimed at eliminating the remnants of the terrorists.
