The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq has welcomed a generous contribution of DKK 22 million (approximately $3.4 million) from the Government of Denmark to support efforts aimed at protecting civilians from explosive ordnance (EO) and advancing humanitarian and reconstruction work across Iraq.
Iraq remains one of the most heavily contaminated countries in the world in terms of explosive remnants of war. According to national mine action authorities – the Directorate for Mine Action (DMA) and the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) – more than 2,723 square kilometres are affected by landmines, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and other forms of EO, including across the Kurdistan Region. These hazards continue to threaten lives, restrict access to essential services, and impede economic recovery and development.
Denmark’s latest contribution will allow UNMAS Iraq to continue supporting national partners in building a coordinated and sustainable mine action sector. This includes conducting surveys and clearance operations, as well as delivering explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) in the most vulnerable and heavily impacted areas.
“UNMAS Iraq deeply appreciates the generous contribution from the Government of Denmark. These funds help us continue supporting DMA, IKMAA, and local operators to create a safer environment for all Iraqis,” said Pehr Lodhammar, UNMAS Chief Mine Action Programme. “Under Denmark’s Peace and Stabilisation Programme 2022–2025, Denmark has contributed approximately $11.5 million. We look forward to further cooperation from 2026 onwards.”
Since 2015, Denmark has contributed over $41 million to UNMAS Iraq, making it one of the programme’s most consistent and committed donors. Its ongoing support plays a crucial role in helping affected communities rebuild their lives free from the dangers of explosive contamination.
