Iraqi President meets Special Representative of UN Secretary-General in Baghdad.

Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, President of the Republic of Iraq, received Mohammed al-Hassan, the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq, at Baghdad Palace on Wednesday, 9 July 2025.

The two sides held discussions on the latest political, security, and economic developments both within Iraq and across the wider region. President Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to holding parliamentary elections as scheduled in November, emphasising the importance of ensuring broad participation from all segments of Iraqi society in a free and transparent electoral process.

He noted that the state has mobilised all available resources to support the Independent High Electoral Commission in meeting its requirements, and stressed the importance of creating the right conditions for successful elections, including taking legal measures against the misuse of political funds.

President Rashid also underscored the vital role of the United Nations in supporting Iraq’s preparations for the elections and advancing the democratic process. 

In response, al-Hassan reiterated the UN’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Iraq across various sectors. He affirmed the UN’s continued support for development efforts, addressing ongoing challenges, and fostering peaceful coexistence among all Iraqi communities.
