The President of the Republic of Iraq, Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, and First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed met on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in Seville, with King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife, Queen Letizia, during a reception hosted by the King of Spain in honour of the leaders, heads of state, and delegations participating in the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4).

Upon arrival at the reception, the President and First Lady were greeted by the King and Queen of Spain.

Iraqi President and First Lady expressed their gratitude to His Majesty for the kind invitation to attend the FfD4, and extended their best wishes for the success of the event. They commended Spain’s steadfast support for the legitimate cause of the Palestinian people, its efforts to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, and its advocacy for the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

President Rashid reaffirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral relations between Iraq and Spain, and to strengthening cooperation in ways that serve the mutual interests of both nations. He also voiced his hope that the conference would yield recommendations that reflect the aspirations of nations worldwide for security, stability, progress, and prosperity.

As the current Chair of the Group of 77 (G77), Iraq’s participation in the FfD4 underscores its leadership role among developing countries in championing fair, inclusive, and effective development financing.

Scheduled to take place in Seville from 30 June to 3 July 2025, the FfD4 conference will assess progress in implementing the Monterrey Consensus, the Doha Declaration, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. It will also address urgent global issues, including the reform of the international financial system and the mobilisation of equitable and inclusive development financing.

This marks the first official reception of an Iraqi President and First Lady by the King and Queen of Spain since 2003—a notable milestone in the deepening of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The official dinner convened a number of world leaders, senior policymakers, and representatives from international organisations to mark the opening of this major UN gathering, which aims to build a more sustainable and inclusive global financial architecture.
