The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mohammed al-Hassan, emphasised that disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government must be addressed through dialogue. He also highlighted Iraq’s constructive role in the peace process in Türkiye.

During his briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday evening, 10 June 2025, regarding the situation in Iraq and the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), al-Hassan stated: “Iraq is striving to achieve stability and to establish well-rounded international relations. I am confident in the Iraqi people’s ability to restore their country's stature, and preparations for the parliamentary elections are progressing.”

He further noted that the Independent High Electoral Commission is making notable strides and is firmly committed to holding elections that are free, fair, and transparent. He said UNAMI will continue to provide expert technical support to facilitate this, including efforts to encourage broad participation from women, young people, and minority communities.

The Special Representative also reported that the Iraqi government remains committed to repatriating its nationals from al-Hol camp, with 800 individuals having recently returned. He mentioned that the government has provided compensation to Yazidi survivors and other minority groups, and described the decision to grant land ownership rights to Yazidis as a significant step forward.

Regarding relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government, al-Hassan said that disputes must be addressed through dialogue. He also observed that Iraq has advanced a draft resolution on minority rights and is implementing a national strategy to counter hate speech. He concluded by noting that UNAMI has closed its offices in Mosul and Kirkuk, with only six months remaining in its mandate, and that efforts are underway to scale down staff numbers.
