On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, diplomatic and military tensions between the United States and Iran intensified, with notable developments on both sides. Oman announced that a fifth round of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran will be held this Friday in Rome, focusing on Iran’s nuclear programme and wider regional stability.

As reported by The New York Post, Israel is reportedly preparing for a potential military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. US intelligence has observed movements of Israeli air munitions and military drills, suggesting a possible attack, even as US President Donald Trump seeks to revive a nuclear agreement with Tehran, having issued a 60-day ultimatum to Iran’s leadership.

At the same time, Iranian officials remain adamant about continuing uranium enrichment, a central point of contention that threatens to derail any potential progress. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has expressed doubt over the outcome of the talks, while US officials maintain that halting enrichment is a necessary condition for any future agreement.

The situation remains highly volatile, with the upcoming discussions in Rome seen as a crucial opportunity for diplomacy—or a potential turning point towards further escalation.
