Iraqi President Meets New NATO Mission Commander.

His Excellency the President of the Republic of Iraq, Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, received the new Commander of the NATO Mission in Iraq, General Christoph Hentzé, today, Wednesday 21 May 2025, at the Baghdad Palace. The meeting was held in the presence of the former Commander, Lieutenant General Lukas Schweizer.

At the outset, President Rashid extended a warm welcome to both commanders and wished them success in their respective responsibilities. The discussions centred on enhancing cooperation between Iraq and NATO, particularly in areas related to capacity building and the support of Iraqi armed forces through advisory and training efforts.

President Rashid underlined the importance of further developing the capabilities of Iraq’s security forces to enable them to effectively confront security challenges, thereby contributing to the reinforcement of peace and stability across the country.

The meeting also touched upon the broader security situation and recent developments within the region. The Iraqi President stressed the need to broaden the scope of cooperation between Iraq and NATO to include improvements in human resource management and intelligence systems aimed at combating terrorism.

General Hentzé, for his part, expressed his appreciation to the President and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties. He also underscored the alliance’s dedication to ensuring the success of its mission in Iraq in a way that meets the aspirations of the Iraqi people for lasting security and stability.
