The European Union and the United Kingdom have reached a tentative agreement ahead of a major summit in London, according to Reuters. The deal marks a significant step towards closer cooperation post-Brexit, particularly in the areas of defence, trade, and mobility.

As part of the agreement, the EU will receive a 12-year extension of access to UK fishing waters—an increase from the previously offered five years. In exchange, a veterinary agreement will be introduced to reduce export barriers for British agri-food products.

Discussions are also continuing on a youth mobility scheme and the UK’s possible return to the Erasmus student exchange programme, though no commitments have been made yet.

The summit, expected later this week, will include the signing of a formal security and defence pact, as well as a communiqué on strengthening economic ties. UK firms are also expected to regain eligibility for EU defence contracts.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa are scheduled to meet to formalise the agreement.
