Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani, has ordered the return of Iraqi troops from Pakistan to Iraq, where they had been participating in training programmes, on Saturday, 10 May 2025.

The Iraqi Ministry of Defence announced in a statement received by PUKMEDIA that Prime Minister Al-Sudani has instructed the repatriation of the 500 trainees-officers and personnel-of the 2nd Battalion, 66th Brigade, 2nd Special Forces Division, who are currently in Pakistan under a prior training agreement, due to the prevailing situation in Pakistan.

The statement continued: “This measure is taken out of concern for the safety of our heroic armed forces,” noting that “the ministry has taken the necessary steps to facilitate their return to Iraq.”

This decision follows heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after a deadly terrorist attack claimed the lives of 26 tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir region.

India launched air strikes and missile attacks against Pakistan last Wednesday, and since then, both countries have engaged in daily clashes, resulting in dozens of fatalities.
