In a momentous development, the Catholic Church has elected a new pope following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April 2025. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old native of Chicago, has been chosen by the College of Cardinals to lead the Church, becoming the first American to hold the position. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV.

The conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel, concluded on 8 May after four rounds of voting. White smoke rose from the chapel chimney at 6:07 p.m. CEST, signalling the election of the new pontiff.

Renowned for his pastoral dedication and extensive administrative experience as the former Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, Pope Leo XIV is expected to provide both compassionate and steady leadership as the Church navigates a complex global landscape. His election marks a new chapter in Vatican history—uniting American origins with worldwide responsibility.

Celebrations erupted in St Peter’s Square as faithful across the globe welcomed the new pope with hope and anticipation.
