On 6 May 2025, India announced the commencement of a military operation, “Operation Sindoor,” involving missile strikes on nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the strikes targeted sites identified as “terrorist infrastructure” believed to be linked to the 22 April incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir, in which 26 civilians were killed.

Pakistani authorities reported casualties, including at least one child, and noted damage to civilian buildings, including homes and places of worship. Power outages were also reported in parts of Muzaffarabad. The government of Pakistan strongly condemned the strikes and stated it would respond at a time it considered appropriate.

The escalation has prompted concern from the international community. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for maximum restraint from both sides and urged renewed diplomatic engagement to help de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

The situation remains tense, with both countries on high alert and closely monitoring developments.
