Microsoft has confirmed that Skype will officially close on 5 May 2025, bringing to a close the journey of one of the most recognisable platforms in the history of online communication. First launched in 2003, Skype quickly became a household name for voice and video calls over the internet.
In recent years, however, its popularity has waned in the face of rising competition from services like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Microsoft’s own Teams. By 2023, Skype’s daily active users had fallen to around 36 million, a sharp decline from its peak.
Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to Microsoft Teams, which offers similar communication tools along with additional features for collaboration and productivity. Users are advised to export their chat history and personal data ahead of the closure.
Though its time is coming to an end, Skype’s impact on digital communication remains significant, having paved the way for how millions connect across the globe.
