The Socialist International (SI) Committee on Kurdish People has been reactivated following an initiative by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Dr. Dara Khaylani, Head of the PUK’s Foreign Relations Department, described the move as both necessary and significant, stating: “The reactivation of the committee addresses an important need and represents a major achievement. We intend to use this platform to advocate for the Kurdish cause across all four parts of Kurdistan at the international level.”

Dr. Khailany told PUKMEDIA that the Committee on Kurdish People-officially the Committee for Kurdish Affairs within the SI-was revived through the efforts of the PUK, alongside other Kurdish parties and observers within the organisation.

“Its reactivation was essential at this time, as Kurdistan and the wider world face significant changes. The developments ahead require us to act responsibly. We aim to use this position to lobby for the Kurdish cause internationally,” he said.

He added that all seven Kurdish parties represented on the committee agree on the necessity of Kurdish unity.

“We convened to establish guidelines and agreed to work within the SI, alongside allies from other countries, to seize emerging opportunities. Our goal is to build a brighter and more peaceful future for Kurdistan, and to have a positive impact on the region and beyond,” Dr. Khailany said.

Referring to the meeting with the SI secretariat and leadership on 3 May 2025, Dr. Khailany noted: “We resolved to organise a conference, inviting all Kurdish parties and our international partners. This event will provide a vital platform for Kurds to make their voices heard globally, to press for peace and democracy, and to secure international support.”

Dr. Khailany also highlighted the PUK’s efforts over the past year to bring together Kurdish parties from all four parts of Kurdistan, culminating in the reactivation of the SI Committee on Kurdish People in Sulaymaniyah. “This is a significant achievement and a source of pride,” he said.

He confirmed that the SI holds two conferences annually, with this year’s event set to take place in Istanbul, focusing on the situation in Türkiye and the challenges facing the Republican People’s Party (CHP). “As Kurdish parties, we have prepared a joint proposal to present in Istanbul on behalf of all participating Kurds,” Dr. Khailany added.

The meeting of the Socialist International (SI) Committee on Kurdish People, took place under the supervision of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday, 3 May 2025.

Dr. Jwan Ihsan, Member of the PUK Political Bureau, and comrade Salar Sarhad attended the meeting which was supervised by Dara Khailany, Member of the PUK Leadership Council and Head of the party’s Foreign Relations Department.

The meeting was attended representatives from Kurdish political entities from all four parts of Kurdistan. These included the Democratic Union Party, the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, Kurdistan Komala Party, the Communist Party of Iran, and the Syrian Democratic Forces. All were present at the invitation of the PUK.

During the meeting, participants engaged in an in-depth discussion on the structure and operating principles of the Kurdish Committee, as well as the roadmap for future collaborative efforts. The aim of these discussions was to strengthen Kurdish unity and solidarity in the pursuit of shared goals and legitimate national rights.

At the conclusion of the meeting, representatives from the participating parties expressed their appreciation to the PUK for its initiative in bringing together political organisations from all four parts of Kurdistan.
