Mark Carney, a former central banker and political novice, achieved a historic win when the Liberal party of Canada secured a fourth term in office, concluding a remarkable electoral comeback.

Last month, 60-year-old Mark Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party.

After almost ten years in office and dismal approval ratings, Trudeau resigned in January.

Carney was the first Canadian prime minister to hold the position without having served in a cabinet or as a lawmaker. Before being appointed deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003, he worked for 13 years at Goldman Sachs in London, New York, and Japan.

At the age of 42, he returned in 2008 after leaving in November 2004 to take a position at the top finance ministry. Carney oversaw the Financial Stability Board, which organises financial regulation for the Group of 20 economies, from 2011 to 2018. Carney was a United Nations ambassador on finance and climate change after departing the Bank of England in 2020.

He became the first non-British governor in the history of the central bank and the first individual to lead two G7 central banks when the Bank of England decided to hire him in 2013.

In addition, he chaired the Bloomberg board and was a member of the Brookfield Asset Management board.
